The 3rd Golden Age of Television

The golden age of television was a time period where much criticism was focused on movies and television shows. Criticism was expressed through female and male critics, which supplied directors, writers, and producers many different angles to view, change, or not change the way they wrote and later produced a movie. Many different types of television go through criticism and through the boom of serial television, came the boom of criticism. Online criticism heavily increased in quantity, quality, and in its respectability. Martin and Sepinwall do not focus on how television could be different from what it is today because of criticism but rather what it is and how it came to be. It is amazing to step back and look at what had to happen and what created the shows and movies that we all watch today. I never really appreciated the steps that must have been taken to produce these great movies and shows that exist today. Criticism is a harsh step to have to deal with but a very helpful tool in creating great writing and shows. I believe that if one can really appreciate criticism and understand it along with the ability to use it for their own advantage, a writer can truly produce a great piece.

  1. A great point you made regarding how criticism is not always enjoyable but can really push things to the next level such as in TV. This period can be marked as a time with lots of criticism but in the end pushed TV to where it is now. TV has come along way and has changed greatly. Good post.

  2. Why do you think that criticism is a difficult step for TV to go through? It seems like in some cases it has actually acted as a kind of supplement to its popularity. Do you think it is possible that perhaps it was necessary to first have a forum for popular criticism to take place before these complex shows could evolve?

  3. I was saying that all criticism is hard to go through but definitely a useful tool. I think that when I was saying, "criticism is a harsh step to have to deal with," came out wrong. I was trying to say that it is hard to take in and sometimes tough to accept criticism because nobody wants to hear that their work is wrong. I definitely think that criticism can be used as kind of a supplement to its popularity and I do believe that perhaps it was necessary to first have a forum for popular criticism to take place before these complex shows could evolve.

  4. Ah, I see, it is really a misunderstanding here about the term "criticism." in this case, the term means not "negative feedback," but "an detailed analysis and evaluation, which may include some level of judgment or feedback." It's always interesting to see when an apparent misunderstanding is really just a matter of getting definitions straight!
